Social Media in the News – March

Happy Spring! While you’ve been focusing on the nicer weather and the sun setting later, our favorite social media networks have been growing and expanding their capabilities. Here’s what has happened in March:

Instagram is switching its feed from chronological to best posts first – Last week, Instagram announced that it will start rearranging the order of posts in its feed. Rather than strictly reverse chronological, the network will order posts “based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post.”

Twitter is testing new stickers – This new feature will allow users to add images to photos before tweeting them out. It will also let people see how other users from around the world have edited the same photo and will also suggest photos that you can edit and post to participate in trending conversations and breaking news.

vTime, a social network for virtual reality is introduced – vTime, the first virtual reality social network from Starship, has now launched on Google Cardboard, and will allow you to hang out with your friends in an artificial environment.

Snapchat changed the iOS app font – Snapchat updated its font on the iOS app, which now appears throughout the app — though not in photo captions or on Snapchat Discover.

Twitter’s algorithmic timeline is now available to everyone – Twitter’s new algorithm is here to stay now that it’s enabled by default. If you want to disable it, you can head to your settings easily enough and be rid of it forever.’

Facebook’s new profile picture options – You can now support a cause you care about, cheer on your favorite sports team or celebrate a moment in life with many different profile picture options. You can also tell Facebook when you want to switch back to your previous profile picture.

Samsung to unveil “Waffle” – This new social network will enable users to add their own perspective to someone else’s content and vice versa.
