Social Media Recap – December 2017

As the year comes to a close, here is a look back at the December 2017 top social media headlines:

This month,  Facebook introduced Messenger Kids, a messaging platform specifically for kids. The app’s main focus is for children to send messages and pictures to family and friends in a safe, controlled environment that can be monitored by parents or adults. The app also has photo features such as filters, stickers and drawing options.

Twitter has a new most retweeted tweet of all time. When Carter Wilkerson asked the fast food chain Wendy’s how many retweets it would take to earn free chicken nuggets for a year, #NuggsforCarter was born. Over, 3.5 million retweets later, this request has beat out Ellen’s Oscar selfie, and it has gained the attention of celebrities and brands such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft! Carter is now verified on Twitter and has a Wendy’s gift card for a year’s worth of free nuggets.

Instagram announced this month that users would be able to follow hashtags in their personal feeds and stories. This gives users the opportunity to stay on top of their favorite trends or topics, and allows communities to grow.

Snapchat released Lens Studio on December 14th as a way to engage a global community of creators. The free app will allow anyone to design, create and share custom or personalized lenses through snapchat. Lenses are animated filters, such as the notorious dancing hot dog, that can be shared and unlocked with a unique snap code.

Last but not least, Vine creator Dom Hoffman surprised fans by announcing a potential Vine comeback. Users were outraged after the original Vine app was discontinued by Twitter in January of 2017, possibly prompting Hoffman to work on Vine 2.0 as an “outside project”.
