Social Media Recap August 2017
Summer is coming to a close, and social media platforms from Facebook to Snapchat and everything in between are updating! Here’s a list of the top 5 things you need to know about what went on in the world of social media in August:
Snapchat introduced a crowd surfing feature, which allows viewers to switch between snaps at an event. The first event to use this feature was Lorde’s performance at the Outside Lands Festival where it showed different perspectives of the concert in a continuous stream. This feature, which has already been seen in select “Our Stories”, will be available in the future for “select event coverage” according to Snap Inc.
Recently Facebook proved they are serious about breaking into China’s social market by secretly releasing a new app, “Colorful Balloons” under an unaffiliated company name. The app shares the same purpose as Facebook’s Moments app, which focuses on photo sharing.
In regards to recent events in Charlottesville, former President Barack Obama shared a Nelson Mandela quote on Twitter, which gained over 4 million likes and 1.5 retweets. Obama’s tweet took the spot for most liked tweet, once held by Ellen DeGeneres for her 2014 Oscar selfie.
This month, LinkedIn started integrating the ability to create short, 30 second videos in its mobile app. Currently, the feature is only available to 500 select LinkedIn Influencers, who are using it to share an intimate look inside their work and thoughts on industry trends.
Instagram implemented a more uniform way to read comments this month by introducing threads. This format might seem a tad familiar because it is much like how their parent company, Facebook, organizes their comments!
