Social Media in the News – April

I can’t believe that April has already come and almost gone. It’s been a busy month here at Cyphers, but we still had time to learn about all of the updates happening in the social media world. Here are just a few of the major developments:

Facebook has opened Instant Articles to all publishers: No matter the type, size or location, any publisher can share their branded content. Over one thousand publishers worldwide are officially part of the program.

Facebook Messenger & Dropbox are working together: Dropbox launched a new feature that makes it easier to share photos, videos and other files in Facebook Messenger. When you tap the “More” button in Messenger for iOS or Android, you’ll see Dropbox as an available source.

Google Play Music takes on podcasts: Google put out a statement explaining, “We’ll connect you with podcasts based on what you’re doing, how you’re feeling and what you’re interested in. Similar to contextual playlists for music, we want to make it easy to find the right podcast – whether you’re a podcast aficionado or listening for the first time.”

Face-Swap with your camera roll on Snapchat and stop playing for replays: TechCrunch posted about the latest updates from Snapchat. As of April 21, every snap can be replayed once, but you can no longer buy extra replays. In more positive news, Snapchat’s latest feature allows users to exchange your face with someone else in your photo or video from your camera roll.

Facebook Messenger rolled out group calling: The Messenger app will now support group calls for every user. During the group call, the app will display the group name and the list of the participating users. Users that are invited to the call can accept or decline it. This feature can be useful for calling multiple family members, friends and business contacts at the same time.

Pinterest’s app got an upgrade: Pinterest announced that they gave their app a complete overhaul. A new modern look allows for more focus on Pins. In an effort to provide the best user experience for everyone, the app is now legible no matter what language or what screen size you have, and it loads up to 3 times faster.

Pinterest introduced it Promoted Pins Bulk Editor: Pinterest’s bulk editor is designed to make it easier to create or edit many pins at once. It also allows you to upload images in bulk that you can use for promoted pins later. The best uses for this tool include bulk editing and image uploads, along with split testing.

Snapchat’s crazy 3D stickers are available on iOS: Now users can “pin” emojis to objects in videos, and have those emojis track that object and move around with them.

Add an ad overlay on your Instagram pictures: When Instagram launched advertising for all businesses on the platform last September, they introduced the ability to click offsite from Instagram with action-driving ads. A few weeks ago, Instagram implemented an image overlay after a user single taps on a performance-based ad.
